Indians 3, Tigers 2: Zach McAllister worked six strong innings in near-freezing temperatures and Yan Gomes had two hits, including a two-run triple, as visiting Cleveland upended Detroit.

McAllister (2-0) allowed a run on four hits and two walks while Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen worked an inning apiece to bridge the gap to John Axford, who stranded a runner at third with one out in the ninth for his fifth save. Lonnie Chisenhall had two hits to raise his average to .421 while Asdrubal Cabrera singled and scored a run for the Indians.

Anibal Sanchez (0-1) struck out a season-high eight but struggled with his command early and yielded three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks – all within the first seven batters he faced. Miguel Cabrera drove in both of Detroit’s runs while Victor Martinez, Austin Jackson, Alex Avila and Ian Kinsler had two hits apiece.

After walking the bases loaded to open the game, Sanchez managed to escape the opening frame with minimal damage when he induced a double-play grounder from Carlos Santana – allowing Michael Bourn to score – before Michael Brantley fouled out to third. Detroit evened it in the bottom half as Kinsler led off with a double and crossed the plate on Miguel Cabrera’s groundout two batters later.

Sanchez’s struggles continued into the second when Asdrubal Cabrera reached on an error by Miguel Cabrera at first and David Murphy drew another walk ahead of Gomes, who plated both on a one-hop triple to the gap in right-center. Miguel Cabrera added an RBI single in the eighth off Allen and the Tigers got the tying run in scoring position, but Avila’s one-out double in the ninth went for naught as Don Kelly struck out and Rajai Davis grounded out to short to end it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: After postponing Tuesday’s series opener due to bad weather, the majority of this contest was played with the temperature in the high 30s. … Detroit lost for only the 11th time in its last 45 home games against Cleveland. … Bourn scored a run but went hitless in four at-bats after missing the first 13 games due to a hamstring injury.
