Cubs 4, Rockies 1: Tsuyoshi Wada pitched seven strong innings for his first major-league win as host Chicago claimed the opener of a three-game series.

Anthony Rizzo drove in two runs and Emilio Bonifacio had two hits and scored twice for the Cubs. Wada (1-1) struck out six and limited the Rockies to one run and five hits in his third big-league start, and Hector Rondon worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save.

The Rockies wasted a strong effort from rookie Yohan Flande (0-3), who allowed two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings while racking up eight strikeouts. Nolan Arenado knocked in the only run for Colorado, which was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the fourth as Bonifacio singled and Arismendy Alcantara doubled to start the inning and spark a two-run rally. Bonifacio scored the game's first run on Rizzo's groundout and Alcantara came home on Justin Ruggiano's sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Arenado's two-out RBI single got the Rockies on the board in the sixth, but they stranded a runner at third — one of four times they did so. Chicago tacked on some insurance in the eighth as the first four batters reached against Nick Masset, with John Baker scoring on Masset's wild pickoff throw and Rizzo bringing home Bonifacio with a sinking single to center.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado has lost 13 of its last 14 away from home and has the majors' worst road record at 16-34. … Rockies SS Josh Rutledge (illness) was a late scratch from the lineup. … The Cubs traded 2B Darwin Barney to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday for a player to be named later.
