Padres 13, Cubs 3: Rene Rivera homered among three hits while driving in three runs and scoring twice as visiting San Diego scored a season high for runs in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Tyson Ross (9-10) racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts in six innings, limiting Chicago to one run and five hits for his seventh straight quality start. Will Venable added three hits and two RBIs and Seth Smith had three hits and scored twice for the Padres, who entered the game averaging 2.99 runs but scored 21 in the final two games of the series.

Edwin Jackson (5-11) allowed five runs (four earned) and seven hits over five innings before leaving the game because of cramping in his pitching hand. Starlin Castro had two hits and an RBI and Arismendy Alcantara added a pair of hits and scored a run for the Cubs.

San Diego broke it open with a nine-run sixth inning in which it sent 15 batters to the plate — the first nine of which scored. Rivera, Alexi Amarista and Chris Nelson each had two-run singles during the outburst.

The Padres led 2-0 after one as Yasmani Grandal tripled home a run and scored on Venable's RBI single, but the Cubs cut the margin in half on Luis Valbuena's RBI single in the fourth. Rivera's solo shot to left-center in the fifth and the big sixth put it out of reach, but the Cubs eased some of the pain in the eighth with RBI singles from Castro and Chris Coghlan.
