Indians 3, White Sox 2:
Yan Gomes smashed a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning and drove in all three runs as Cleveland seized the rubber match from visiting Chicago.

The Indians squandered the lead in the top of the frame but Nick Swisher led off the bottom of the eighth with a single off Javy Guerra (0-2) before Gomes belted a 1-1 slider the opposite way into the White Sox bullpen in right. Bryan Shaw (4-1), who allowed two runs on three hits in the top of the inning, ended up with the win in relief and Cody Allen took care of the ninth for his 12th save.

John Danks allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings and left in line for the win before handing it off to Guerra. Gordon Beckham and Leury Garcia each singled in a run in the eighth while Jose Abreu recorded three hits for Chicago.

Trevor Bauer struck out a career-high 10 and scattered eight hits while walking three over 6 2/3 innings before handing a 1-0 lead over to the Cleveland bullpen. Marc Rzepczynski got the final out of the seventh but Shaw surrendered a one-out single to Conor Gillaspie in the eighth and unleashed a wild pitch before Beckham singled in the tying run and eventually scored on Garcia’s base hit.

The White Sox bullpen, which has squandered the lead in each of the team’s last four losses, proved not be up to the task again as the Indians pushed back to .500 at 47-47. Gomes gave Cleveland the lead with an RBI single in the second and Mike Aviles joined Swisher and Gomes with two hits apiece.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago recalled SS Carlos Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte and started him in place of All-Star Alexei Ramirez, who is day-to-day after leaving Saturday’s game with back stiffness. … Abreu is 12-for-24 over his last six games and heads into the All-Star break with a league-leading 29 home runs. … Aviles added a spectacular defensive play in the second when he ran to catch a fly ball near foul territory in left and fired a strike to first base to double off Gillaspie.
