Braves 2, Padres 0: Ervin Santana matched his career high with 11 strikeouts over eight innings and Evan Gattis knocked in both runs as Atlanta edged visiting San Diego to take three of four in the series.

Gattis recorded three hits, including a go-ahead solo homer, and Chris Johnson added a pair of singles as the Braves finished their homestand 6-5. Santana (10-6) allowed five hits and did not walk a batter to win his third consecutive start while Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 32nd save.

Yonder Alonso collected two singles, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch one to the double, as the Padres finished their road trip 3-4. San Diego’s 37-year-old Jason Lane (0-1) – a former major-league outfielder – did not walk a batter and struck out two while yielding one run on six hits over six-plus innings in his first big-league start.

Gattis opened the scoring in the seventh, lining the second pitch of the inning from Lane into the left-field seats for his 17th of the season. Justin Upton walked with one out in the eighth and scored an insurance run when Gattis poked a two-out single to right.

Santana struck out nine in the first six innings and escaped his only jam in the fourth when Jedd Gyorko grounded out with two on and two out. Lane, the oldest pitcher to make his first major-league start since St. Louis' Troy Percival at 38 in 2007, was just as sharp keeping the game scoreless through six frames.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta RF Jason Heyward left the game in the fourth with lower back soreness. …The Padres placed OF Carlos Quentin (sore left knee) on the 15-day disabled list and Gyorko was activated, going 1-for-3. …Lane batted .241 between 2002-2007 with Houston and San Diego.
