Cubs 16, Red Sox 9:
Justin Ruggiano homered and drove in five as Chicago pounded out 19 hits and completed a three-game sweep of host Boston.

Mike Olt, Welington Castillo and Nate Schierholtz homered and Darwin Barney tripled among four hits, drove in a run and scored twice for the Cubs, who totaled six runs in their previous four games. Carlos Villanueva (4-5) allowed two runs in as many innings to earn the win in relief of Travis Wood, who was reached for three runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 frames.

Mookie Betts hit his first career home run and Jonny Gomes drove in two as the Red Sox managed more than three runs for the fourth time in the last 18 games. Brandon Workman (1-2) suffered through his worst start since joining the rotation as he was pounded for six runs on five hits in four innings.

Chicago wasted little time grabbing the lead as Chris Coghlan drew a leadoff walk and Ruggiano sent a blast over the Green Monster seats in left. Starlin Castro capped the first-inning rally with an RBI single and the Cubs tacked on three more in the fourth on Olt’s massive shot to left-center and Coghlan’s sacrifice fly.

Boston loaded the bases on a hit, a hit-by-pitch and walk against Wood in the fourth and scored two runs on a sacrifice fly and Gomes’ single before Villanueva came on to get the final out. Castillo took left-hander Felix Doubront’s fastball into the first row in center in the fifth and Betts countered with his two-run blast to left in the bottom of the frame – his first career hit at Fenway Park – but Chicago piled on against the bullpen.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Red Sox DH David Ortiz doubled in the third to record his 1,000th career extra-base hit. … Barney came up a home run shy of the cycle in his first four-hit game since May 21, 2013. … The game clocked in at 4:19, making it the longest nine-inning game in the majors this season.
