Orioles 1, Blue Jays 0: Miguel Gonzalez pitched five strong innings and Jonathan Schoop homered as Baltimore tuned up for the playoffs with a win over host Toronto.

Gonzalez (10-9) gave up five hits and needed only 62 pitches to get through his afternoon, as he was scheduled for a shortened outing in preparation for the Orioles' first-round playoff series against American League Central champion Detroit beginning Thursday. Baltimore, which finished the regular season at 96-66, avoided its first four-game losing streak since May.

Toronto, meanwhile, finished the campaign at 83-79 and has missed the playoffs every season since winning back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993. R.A. Dickey (14-13) was the hard-luck loser, tossing six innings in which he gave up just one run and two hits.

Schoop's 16th homer - a full-count blast over the left-field wall in the fifth - accounted for the game's only run. That proved to be enough offense for the Orioles, who used four relievers to bridge the gap to Zach Britton, who utilized a double play and a strikeout to work around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 37th save.

The Blue Jays wasted a leadoff double in the first, a leadoff single in the second, a two-out triple in the fifth and a runner on second with nobody out in the sixth. Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis was the only player in the game to notch two hits, as the teams combined for only 11.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Orioles have four 10-game winners for the first time since 1997. ... Baltimore pitchers combined to strike out eight hitters without issuing a walk. ... Orioles OF Nelson Cruz, who went 0-for-4, finished with a league-high 40 home runs.
