Mets 9, Diamondbacks 0: Kirk Nieuwenhuis had three hits and three RBIs in his season debut as visiting New York sent Arizona to its fifth straight loss.

Eric Young Jr. delivered three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored in the leadoff spot and Daniel Murphy had two hits and two runs scored for the Mets, helping make a winner of Jenrry Mejia (2-0), who allowed two hits in five scoreless innings. Nieuwenhuis, who was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day after outfielder Juan Lagares was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled hamstring, had an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the fourth, the only two innings New York scored.

The Diamondbacks came into the game with the highest ERA in the majors at 5.95 and starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo (1-1) quickly inflated that number by allowing nine runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. The bullpen did its job from there as Randall Delgado, Oliver Perez, J.J. Putz and Addison Reed combined to shut out the Mets over the final five innings.

The first three batters reached base safely against Arroyo before the next three drove in runs. Arroyo settled down and retired the next seven batters, but Andre Brown led off the fourth with a single and Nieuwenhuis followed with a home run, opening the floodgates for four more runs, all charged to Arroyo, whose ERA skyrocketed from 4.82 to 9.95.

Mejia retired the first nine batters before walking Gerardo Parra to lead off the fourth. Parra reached third with one out but didn’t score, and the Diamondbacks again put a runner on third with one in the fifth but Mejia pitched out of the jam before developing a blister and handing the ball over to relievers Gonzalez Germen and Kyle Farnsworth, who limited Arizona to one hit over the final four innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Mets came in averaging just over four runs but have score 19 in Mejia’s three starts. … Brown started in right field in place of Curtis Granderson (ribs), who was still sore after colliding with the wall in the first inning of Monday’s series opener. … Mets 3B David Wright had two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games, his longest since September 2012.
