Padres 8, Rockies 5: Seth Smith slugged a two-run homer and Yonder Alonso recorded two doubles and two RBIs to lead visiting San Diego past Colorado.
The Padres set season highs by drawing nine walks and turning five double plays in winning for the sixth time in eight games. Pinch hitter Carlos Quentin added a two-run blast and starter Robbie Erlin (3-4) went 2-for-3 with an RBI single.
Troy Tulowitzki was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and Carlos Gonzalez knocked in three runs to pace the Rockies, who had 14 hits but just three with runners in scoring position. Jordan Lyles (5-1), who entered 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA at home, was roughed up for six runs on five hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Alonso had a two-run double in a first inning that saw Lyles walk three batters and hit another. Chris Denorfia doubled and Smith homered in the second to make it 4-1 and Erlin's run-scoring single capped another two-run rally in the third.
Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the fourth and two-run double in the sixth helped Colorado get within 6-5, but Quentin launched his first home run since July to open up a three-run bulge. Tulowitzki lined out with runners on the corners to end the seventh and Gonzalez was stranded after opening the eighth with a double before Huston Street recorded his 13th save with a perfect ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Erlin gave up four runs and nine hits with two strikeouts in five innings. ... Tulowitzki is 35-for-59 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 17 home games. ... The Padres placed RHP Andrew Cashner (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list. RHP Donn Roach will start in Cashner's place in Sunday's series finale.
