Rays 2, Red Sox 1: David Price continued his hot pitching with 7 1/3 strong innings as visiting Tampa Bay edged Boston to move into first place in the American League East.

Price (6-5) struck out eight and allowed one run and two hits and walked none while beating the Red Sox for the second time in six days to give the Rays a half-game lead over Boston. He has won five of six starts since coming off the disabled list.

The game was delayed for 39 minutes due to heavy rain prior to the bottom of the eighth and Price returned and struck out Jonny Gomes in an eight-pitch at-bat before being removed by manager Joe Maddon. Boston placed runners on second and third against Joel Peralta when Brandon Snyder flied out and pinch runner Daniel Nava was thrown out by Rays left fielder Sam Fuld in a controversial call at the plate.

Nava failed to score from second one batter earlier after Stephen Drew doubled over the head of Tampa Bay right fielder Wil Myers. Fernando Rodney struck out Mike Napoli with two on and two out in the ninth for his 26th save in 31 opportunities.

Tampa Bay struck in the fourth against Felix Doubront (7-5) when Sean Rodriguez hit an RBI double off the glove of first baseman Napoli and the Rays added a fifth-inning run on a fielder’s choice by Myers. Snyder homered off the right-field foul pole in the sixth to pull the Red Sox within 2-1.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Replays showed that Nava’s foot touched home plate before Rays C Jose Molina tagged him out to end the eighth. Boston manager John Farrell was ejected by umpire Jerry Meals while arguing the call. … Tampa Bay acquired RHP Jesse Crain from the Chicago White Sox for a player to be named or cash considerations. Crain (shoulder) is on the disabled list. … Doubront gave up two runs and eight hits in five innings while losing to Tampa Bay for the second time in six days.
