Marlins 6, Giants 5:
Jeff Mathis homered and delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning as host Miami avoided a three-game sweep against San Francisco.

Mathis belted a solo home run in the third inning and followed Ed Lucas’ lead-off single with a one-out double to center off Sandy Rosario (3-1) to put Miami on top for good. Chad Qualls (4-1) earned the win in relief and Steve Cishek retired the side in the ninth for his 27th save.

Hunter Pence homered and drove in three while Gregor Blanco recorded three hits and two runs scored for the Giants, who fell into last place in the National League West with the San Diego Padres.

Pence got San Francisco an early lead with a two-run homer in the first and knotted it back up at 3-3 with an RBI single in the fifth. Justin Ruggiano’s bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth gave Miami a 4-3 lead but Brandon Crawford’s solo blast off Mike Dunn in the seventh tied it up again.

Hector Sanchez delivered an RBI double later in the seventh to give the Giants a 5-4 edge, but Guillermo Moscoso could not hold the lead. The right-hander walked Christian Yelich leading off the bottom of the seventh before surrendering Donovan Solano’s RBI double.
