Twins 2, Tigers 1 (10): Jamey Carroll singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as visiting Minnesota finished a doubleheader sweep and spoiled Detroit’s chance to tie for first place in the American League Central.

Denard Span opened the 10th with a single off Tigers closer Jose Valverde (3-4) and Carroll delivered a one-out base hit up the middle. The Tigers, who lost the first game 10-4, dropped one game behind the Chicago White Sox in the Central.

Carroll and Justin Morneau each had a pair of hits for the Twins. Jared Burton (2-1) pitched the ninth to get the victory, retiring Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Delmon Young in order. Glen Perkins pitched a 1-2-3 frame in the 10th for his 14th save.

Austin Jackson singled and scored in Cabrera’s RBI double in the first inning as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead. Twins starter P.J. Walters held Detroit to that run through six innings.

A walk, a single by Matt Carson and two errors allowed the Twins to score an unearned run and tie the game 1-1 in the fifth inning. Tigers starter Drew Smyley, who made one of those miscues, gave up three hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cabrera became the second Tigers player with at least 40 homers and 40 doubles in the same season after his two-base hit in the first. Hank Greenberg did it in 1937 and 1940 for Detroit. … Tigers reliever Al Alburquerque pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He has not allowed a run in 9 1/3 innings since returning from elbow surgery. … The Twins host the Tigers for three games, Sept. 28-30.
