Matt Downs hit a pair of home runs to provide all the scoring for the Astros, who have lost 15 of their last 17 games.

Richard (7-10) allowed four runs on nine hits over 8 1/3 innings and did not walk anyone. The Astros got the tying run to the on-deck circle in the ninth before closer Huston Street recorded the final out for his 15th save.

The Padres knocked Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez (7-8) out of the game early, touching him for five runs on four hits in four innings. Rodriguez had worked five or more innings 48 consecutive starts.
