Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 1: Jason Kubel homered and Arizona overcame a last-minute pitching scratch for a home win against lowly Chicago.

After Geovany Soto’s solo home run in the top of the fourth gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead, Kubel answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning against Jeff Samardzija (5-6), putting the Diamondbacks in front to stay. Aaron Hill added an RBI single in the fifth, and Miguel Montero’s two-run triple in the sixth made it a four-run game.

Arizona’s scheduled starter, Joe Saunders, was scratched just before the game because he was unable get loose during his warmup. His fill-in, Josh Collmenter, gave up just three hits in four innings, walking three and striking out six. Brad Ziegler (4-1) got the win after pitching the fifth and sixth innings.

Justin Upton closed out the scoring in the seventh inning, driving home a run with a ground-rule double off Chicago reliever Jairo Asencio.

The Cubs, who stranded 11 men, loaded the bases in the second and eighth innings but failed to score in both instances.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ziegler got his first career hit and scored his first career run in the win ... Samardzija is 1-5 in his last seven starts and has allowed 18 runs over his last 19 innings of work ... The Cubs had won seven of their previous 10 games against Arizona.
