Braves 5, Nationals 1: Kris Medlen pitched seven shutout innings and Martin Prado’s two-run double helped visiting Atlanta salvage the final contest of the three-game set.

The Braves, who cut Washington’s advantage in the National League East to six games, snapped a four-game losing streak. Medlen (5-1), in his fifth start since joining the rotation, scattered seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in his past 20 1/3 innings.

After Medlen drew a two-out walk from Washington starter Ross Detwiler (7-6) in the fifth, Prado followed with a two-strike double over rookie center fielder Bryce Harper’s head, scoring Tyler Pastornicky and Medlen to put the Braves ahead 2-0.

Washington scored in the eighth off reliever Eric O’Flaherty and Michael Morse’s single to left plated Harper to bring the Nationals within 2-1. O’Flaherty got Ian Desmond to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

David Ross drove in an insurance run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly. Michael Bourn added an RBI single and later scored on a throwing error.

Washington stranded a runner at third in the second as Pastornicky turned a nifty double play on a ball up the middle to end the inning.

The Braves have won Medlen’s past 16 starts, dating back to 2010, breaking John Smoltz’s franchise record of 15 set during his Cy Young award-winning season in 1996.
