Phillies 3, Braves 0: Ryan Howard’s two-run homer capped a three-run first inning and Cole Hamels fired a complete-game shutout as host Philadelphia ended a seven-game losing streak to Atlanta.

The Phillies, who scored just 11 runs in losing their past seven games against the Braves, gave Hamels (12-6) ample support with the early outburst. The left-hander took it from there, allowing just five hits with no walks and five strikeouts to win for the first time since signing a six-year, $144-million contract extension last month.

Jimmy Rollins doubled leading off the bottom of the first off Atlanta starter Mike Minor (6-8). Domonic Brown followed with a double to center, plating Rollins and pushing the Phillies ahead 1-0. With one out, Howard connected on a 1-2 pitch for his fifth homer of the season, giving Philadelphia a 3-0 advantage.

Hamels dominated the Braves, who came in having won 21 of their past 28 games. He allowed five singles and faced just two hitters above the minimum, pitching his first complete game of the season and handing Atlanta its first shutout since July 17.

Minor settled down after his rough start, allowing just four hits after the first. He finished with five strikeouts, two walks, three runs and seven hits allowed in seven innings.

Erik Kratz and Nate Schierholtz each finished with two hits for the Phillies, who won for the third time in four games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia 3B Placido Polanco, on the disabled list with lower back inflammation, said Tuesday he is improving but does not have a timetable for returning. … Atlanta 2B Dan Uggla, a career .145 hitter against Hamels, did not start. Martin Prado played second base and Reed Johnson started in left field. … Hamels made his 100th career start at Citizens Bank Park.
