Orioles 9, Red Sox 1: Ryan Flaherty hit a grand slam and drove in five in support of Chris Tillman, who stymied visiting Boston and helped keep Baltimore’s division title hopes alive.

Chris Davis added a two-run homer in a six-run first inning and rookie Manny Machado drove in a run and scored twice for the Orioles, who remained one game behind the New York Yankees in the American League East. The Yankees trounced the Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 later Friday.

Baltimore did the bulk of its damage against Aaron Cook (4-11) in the first inning. Davis put the Orioles on top with his two-run shot into the bleachers in right-center. They loaded the bases with two outs in front of Flaherty, who got underneath a sinker and sent a towering blast over everything in right field for his first career grand slam and sixth homer of the season.

Tillman (9-2) allowed a bunt single to Scott Podsednik leading off the game and would not allow another hit the rest of the way. The right-hander was charged with an unearned run when Podsednik came in on a sacrifice fly and struck out four while walking two in eight innings to win his fourth straight decision.

Baltimore tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Machado and Flaherty each recorded RBI doubles and Taylor Teagarden chased Flaherty in with a single to center.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The two first-inning blasts gave the Orioles 122 at Camden Yards in 2012, breaking the previous record of 121 set in 1996. … Baltimore C Matt Wieters sat out following birth of son early Friday morning. … Cook lasted one-plus inning and was charged with six runs on five hits while walking three.
