Orioles 4, Red Sox 2: Matt Wieters drove in three runs and scored another and Miguel Gonzalez pitched 6 1/3 solid innings as visiting Baltimore defeated Boston's Jon Lester for the first time in 21 meetings.
Adam Jones added two hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who maintained their comfortable position in the American League wild-card race and remained one game behind AL East-leading New York. The Yankees recorded a 2-1 triumph in 10 innings over Oakland on Friday.
Lester (9-13) dropped to 14-1 against the Orioles, allowing four runs on eight hits over seven innings. Wieters did most of the damage after lining a two-run single past the first-base bag in the fourth inning and doubling home another run and scoring on Mark Reynolds' single in the sixth.
Gonzalez (7-4) allowed two runs on seven hits to earn his first win since Aug. 31 and beat Boston for the second time in a little over a month. Darren O'Day stranded an inherited runner in the seventh and pitched a perfect eighth to get the ball to Jim Johnson, who worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his franchise-record 46th save.
Baltimore has won nine of 13 meetings with Boston this season and needs just one win in the final five meetings to clinch the season series for the first time since 2004.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Orioles hit into inning-ending double plays in the third, fourth and fifth. … O'Day has stranded 35 of 41 inherited runners this season. … Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia snapped an 0-for-18 skid with an RBI single in the fifth.
