Brett Lawrie hit a grand slam in his fifth career major league game to propel the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-4 drubbing of the visiting Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Lawrie, playing just his second game at the Rogers Centre, sent the home crowd into hysterics with his second home run since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 21-year-old blasted a 2-0 pitch from reliever Craig Breslow over the left-field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning, pumping his fist as he rounded the bases.

The five-run sixth inning erased a 3-1 deficit and made a winner of Jays reliever Casey Janssen (4-0), who recorded the final out in the top of the frame.

Jesse Litsch worked the final 2 2/3 innings for his first major league save.

Starter Henderson Alvarez was solid in his major league debut, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Oakland counterpart Gio Gonzalez (9-10) had a rough go of it, charged with four runs on four hits over five frames.

David DeJesus homered off Alvarez in the fourth inning and Josh Willingham added a solo shot in the ninth off Litsch, his team-leading 19th and third in as many games.

The dugouts briefly cleared in the eighth inning after Yunel Escobar objected to being hit by a pitch from Oakland reliever Jordan Norberto. Order was restored moments later.
