James Shields recorded his second shutout of the season as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays avoided a Citrus series sweep with a 4-0 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday.
Matt Joyce doubled in a run and Casey Kotchman added an RBI triple for the Rays, who snapped a three-game slide.
Shields (5-2) struck out a season-high 13 and walked one while yielding just three hits in his third complete game of the season. The 29-year old righthander, who did not have a complete game in either the 2009 or 2010 campaigns, leads the American League in innings pitched and lowered his ERA to 2.00.
Rookie Jay Buente (0-1) was called up and started for Florida in place of the injured Josh Johnson. Buente lasted just three innings, surrendering all four runs - three earned.
Tampa Bay got to the rookie in the second, pushing across two runs on an error and a groundout. Joyce and Kotchman provided some insurance in the third with run-scoring hits.
