Justin Maxwell drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 14th inning, snapping a tie and lifting the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets in the season finale for both teams on Sunday.

Alberto Gonzalez had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals, who halted a four-game losing streak against the Mets.

Oliver Perez (0-5) began the 14th with a strikeout before imploding in his first appearance since Sept. 6. After hitting Adam Kennedy with a pitch, the beleaguered left-hander walked the next three batters, including Maxwell on a 3-2 pitch to force in the go-ahead run.

Joel Peralta (1-0) notched the win after tossing two scoreless innings and Miguel Batista worked the bottom of the 14th for his second save.

Starting pitchers Livan Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey were engaged in a scoreless duel before Washington broke through in the fifth. Roger Bernadina drew a leadoff walk and scored three batters later on Gonzalez's single.

New York didn't trail for long as Angel Pagan opened the bottom of the fifth with a single, moved to third on a base hit by Lucas Duda and came home on Josh Thole's double-play grounder, tying the game at 1-1.

Hernandez worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run and six hits, while Pelfrey yielded one run and four hits in seven frames.
