BOSTON -- Xander Bogaerts stole the spotlight, but Steven Wright was the unsung hero.

The shortstop hit a game-winning two-run double high off the wall in left to highlight a seven-run eighth inning in the Boston Red Sox's come-from-behind 7-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, but it was the right-handed knuckleballer who put them in position to win.

"It was probably the biggest win for us this year, for sure," Bogaerts said.

After an underwhelming start from right-hander Clay Buchholz, who breezed through the first inning but ran into trouble in the second and fourth, Wright entered with a four-run deficit.

Wright (3-2) went on to throw 3 1/3 excellent innings, only allowing one hit and a walk while striking out four to keep the game scoreless and, more importantly, give his team a chance.

"You can't let the eighth inning take away from the work that Steven did today," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "It was an outstanding relief effort on his part."

Before the game, Wright learned he was the odd man out in Boston's six-man starting rotation and would be heading to the bullpen. Wright's last start came on June 4 in an 8-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins -- he surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out two.

"Thankfully, he had two days off after ninety-plus pitches against Minnesota, because the three and a third innings he gave us today stabilized," Farrell said.

The heroics from Bogaerts and Wright gave Boston (27-31) its first series sweep of the season and its first of three of more games since July 18-20 of last season. The team improved to 15-14 at Fenway Park this season, marking the first time it has been above .500 at home since May 1.

"That's why we play nine innings," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who went 2-for-5. "Try to find a way to put it all together to win games."

Boston trailed 4-0 heading into the eighth after a masterful performance from Oakland right-hander Kendall Graveman, who threw seven scoreless innings before giving up a run in the eighth. Graveman was charged with one earned run on six hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts for the Athletics (23-36), who finished their road trip at 2-4.

"He pitched really well," A's manager Bob Melvin said, adding that it was tough to see him wind up with a no-decision after a great outing.

Rusney Castillo started and ended the fun in the eighth. The center fielder hit a leadoff solo home run -- his first long ball of the season -- to put Boston on the board and give the offense a much-needed jolt, and his RBI-single at the end of the frame capped off the scoring.

In between, the Red Sox got key hits from the likes of left fielder Hanley Ramirez, third baseman Pablo Sandoval, pinch-hitting left fielder Alejandro De Aza, and, of course, Bogaerts.

Ramirez singled to short to drive in a run and cut the Red Sox’s deficit to two runs.

Designated hitter David Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly to left, making it a one-run contest, and Sandoval later sent an RBI-single off the wall in left, momentarily confusing A’s left fielder Mark Canha. Mookie Betts pinch ran for Sandoval and stole second, putting a pair of runners in scoring position to set the table for Bogaerts' clutch double.

"Threw a changeup down and in," said Oakland right-hander Tyler Clippard (0-3), who took the loss after surrendering three earned runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. "I got it there. It was probably four inches off in. Normally when guys get to that pitch all they can do is hit it foul. He did a good job of staying inside that pitch running into him and kept it fair."

After the big hit, De Aza pinch hit for catcher Sandy Leon and singled to right to plate Bogaerts. Castillo put the icing on the cake with his one-run single.
