Phillies 5, Giants 3 (10): Cody Asche belted a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th as visiting Philadelphia edged San Francisco in the opener of a three-game series.

Javier Lopez loaded the bases by walking Jimmy Rollins with one out in the 10th and hit Chase Utley with a pitch to score Asche, who doubled off Santiago Casilla (1-3) to begin the inning. Ryan Howard followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Andres Blanco, and the Phillies held on to snap their three-game losing streak.

Ken Giles (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings for his second career win and Jonathan Papelbon retired the Giants in order in the 10th for his 28th save. Michael Morse blasted a three-run homer for San Francisco, which lost for the sixth time in its last seven games and remained 5 1/2 games back of first-place Los Angeles in the National League West.

The late-inning drama overshadowed a stellar pitchers’ duel between the Phillies’ Cole Hamels and San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner, who tossed seven innings of one-run ball with no walks while striking out nine. Hamels, who entered the game with a 0.73 ERA over his previous five starts, allowed three runs over seven frames.

Marlon Byrd cut the Giants’ lead to 3-1 with a leadoff homer in the fifth before Asche snapped a 2-for-28 slump with a two-run homer off Jeremy Affeldt in the eighth. Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-5 and Angel Pagan had two hits for the Giants, who were looking to win two consecutive home games for the first time since winning five in a row from May 27-June 8.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Sandoval was thrown out easily at home on a strong throw from Byrd while trying to score in the eighth. …Pagan extended his hitting streak to nine games for the Giants, who lost for the sixth time in 56 games when leading after seven innings. … Asche’s home run was the first allowed by Affeldt this season and the first to a left-handed batter since April 24, 2011.
